5 Days / 4 NightsWhale Valley UNESCO SitePrivate GuideCairo Round Trip

The 5-day Cairo, Fayoum and Wadi El Hitan holiday pairs the Pyramids of Giza with one of Egypt's best-kept natural wonders. The route runs Cairo → Giza → Fayoum → Wadi El Rayan → Wadi El Hitan → Cairo. A private guide explains the ancient and geological history, a private vehicle handles the desert drives, and the plan can be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget before you book.

Places You Will Visit and Their History

This Egypt desert and oasis tour blends ancient history with natural heritage. Here is the background to each stop.

Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx

The Giza pyramids were built during the 4th Dynasty, around 2600 to 2500 BCE, for Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The Great Pyramid, about 146 metres tall when complete, held the record as the tallest building in the world for thousands of years. The nearby Sphinx is carved from the natural limestone of the plateau.

Grand Egyptian Museum

This museum beside the Giza Plateau tells Egyptian history from prehistory to the Roman era. Its centrepiece is the complete Tutankhamun collection, shown together for the first time since the tomb was found in 1922.

Fayoum Oasis

The Fayoum is a green depression southwest of Cairo, watered by a branch of the Nile known as Bahr Yusuf. Pharaohs of the Middle Kingdom reclaimed land here, and the Ptolemies later settled veterans on it. The area is famous for the Roman-era Fayoum mummy portraits, painted on wood and found in its cemeteries.

Lake Qarun

Lake Qarun, called Moeris in antiquity, is a large salt lake on the northern side of the Fayoum. Its shores are rich in birdlife, and fish and reeds have supported villages here for thousands of years.

Tunis Village

Tunis Village beside the lake has become a small centre for pottery and crafts. Artists and families run workshops where visitors can watch potters work and buy handmade pieces.

Wadi El Rayan

Wadi El Rayan is a protected area created in the 1970s when drainage water filled a desert depression, forming two lakes joined by a channel. The drop between them forms Egypt's only waterfalls, and the surrounding dunes and springs are a haven for birds and desert plants.

Wadi El Hitan Whale Valley

Around 40 million years ago, this desert lay under a warm sea. Wadi El Hitan preserves skeletons of early whales such as Basilosaurus, some of which still show tiny hind limbs, a key clue to how whales evolved from land mammals. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Fossils and Climate Change Museum

At the entrance to the valley, this small museum explains the fossils, the ancient sea and the climate history of the region. It helps you understand what you will see along the trail.

Fayoum and Whale Valley: Why They Matter

Most visitors to Egypt focus on pharaonic temples, yet the Fayoum and Wadi El Hitan tell older stories. The oasis shows how people shaped and farmed a desert basin from the Middle Kingdom onward, while the Whale Valley shows how animals moved from land to sea long before humans existed.

Together with Giza, this journey takes you from the age of the pyramids to the age of whales in only five days. It is also a good option for travellers who prefer lighter crowds, space and landscape to long temple days.
