7-Day Siwa Bahariya and White Desert Oasis Holiday

7 Days / 6 NightsWestern Desert Oases4x4 and Desert CampCairo Round Trip

The 7-day Siwa, Bahariya and White Desert oasis holiday crosses Egypt's Western Desert from the edge of Libya to the chalk monuments of Farafra. The route runs Cairo → Siwa → Bahariya → Black Desert → White Desert → Cairo, linking the Amazigh (Berber) culture and palm groves of Siwa Oasis with the hot springs of Bahariya and a night in a tented camp among the white rocks.

This private Egypt oasis tour suits travellers who want culture, landscape and a real desert experience in one week. A private guide explains the history, experienced 4x4 drivers handle the tracks, and the plan can be adjusted to your dates, pace and comfort level before booking.

Tour Overview

The oases of the Western Desert were stopping points on caravan routes for thousands of years, and each has its own character. Siwa is remote, green and culturally distinct, Bahariya is a farming oasis with Roman and Pharaonic remains, and the White Desert is a landscape of wind-carved chalk. This Western Desert tour from Cairo links all three in one loop.

Places You Will Visit and Their History

Behind the scenery are caravan routes, oracles and ancient seas. Here is the background to each stop on this Siwa and White Desert tour.

Siwa Oasis

Siwa lies about 50 km from the Libyan border and was long isolated from the Nile Valley. Its people are Amazigh (Berber) and speak Siwi, a language of their own. The oasis is famous for dates, olives, natural springs and salt lakes, and its remoteness has preserved many traditions.

Temple of the Oracle at Aghurmi

In 331 BCE, Alexander the Great made a long desert journey to Siwa to consult the Oracle of Amun, whose answer helped to shape his claim to divine descent. The ruined temple on the Aghurmi hill, built in the 6th century BCE, still overlooks palm groves and the town.

Shali Fortress

The old town of Shali was built in the 13th century from kershef, a mix of salt, clay and rock, and rose in tight, defensive layers. Heavy rain in 1926 damaged much of it, leaving a picturesque ruin that rises above today's town.

Mountain of the Dead

Gebel al-Mawta is a hill honeycombed with rock-cut tombs of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Some contain painted scenes, and the hill gives wide views of the oasis.

Cleopatra's Spring

Known locally as Ain Juba, this circular spring is a freshwater pool shaded by palms and has been used for centuries for bathing and irrigation. The name comes from a legend about Cleopatra, which has no historical basis.

Great Sand Sea

South of Siwa begins the Great Sand Sea, a vast field of dunes stretching into Libya. Dune drives, hot and cold springs, and sunsets over the sand are the highlights.

Bahariya Oasis

Bahariya, centred on the town of Bawiti, was a farming and wine-producing oasis in Roman times. Its palm groves and springs still support villages, and its ruins include chapels at Ain el-Muftella and a small temple connected with Alexander the Great.

Valley of the Golden Mummies

Discovered in 1996, this necropolis holds gilded mummies of the Greco-Roman period. The museum in Bawiti displays several of them and explains how Bahariya prospered when it lay on caravan routes.

Black Desert and Crystal Mountain

The Black Desert is covered with dark volcanic rubble that caps conical hills. Crystal Mountain is a low ridge of quartz crystal that glitters in the sun.

White Desert

In the Farafra depression, the White Desert is a protected area of chalk rocks shaped by wind into mushrooms and monuments. It glows white at midday and pink at sunset, and fennec foxes live in its sands.

Siwa Culture and Etiquette

Dress modestly
Siwa is a conservative community. Cover shoulders and knees, especially in town.
Ask before photographing
Always ask permission before photographing people, particularly women.
Alcohol
Alcohol is not sold in Siwa, so plan accordingly.
Local crafts

Bicycles and carts
Many visitors explore the town by bicycle or donkey cart.
Respect the springs
Follow local rules at springs, and use swimwear that is modest.

White Desert Camping: What to Expect

Tents and bedding
Sleeping tents with mattresses and blankets. A warm layer is useful in winter.
Campfire dinner
A hot meal and tea prepared on site by the desert team.
Starry skies
With no light pollution, the Milky Way is easy to see on clear nights.
Basic facilities
Washing and toilets are very simple, so bring wet wipes and a torch.

Winter nights can be near freezing, so pack warm clothes.
