The 5-day Cairo, Minya and Amarna archaeology holiday leaves the crowded Nile highlights behind and heads into Middle Egypt, where some of the country's most original ancient sites stand almost empty. Starting and ending in Cairo, you visit the painted rock tombs of Beni Hassan, the abandoned city of the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten at Tell El Amarna, and the animal catacombs of Tuna El Gebel.
The route runs Cairo → Minya → Beni Hassan → Tell El Amarna → Tuna El Gebel → Cairo. A private Egyptologist explains each site, a private vehicle covers the drives, and the plan can be adjusted to your dates and interests before you book.
Tour Overview
Middle Egypt, the stretch of the Nile Valley between Cairo and Luxor, holds sites that tell stories you will not find at the Pyramids or Karnak. This Middle Egypt archaeology tour concentrates on three of them, each from a different age: Middle Kingdom noble tombs, the radical Amarna period of the New Kingdom, and a Late Period necropolis for the god Thoth.

Places You Will Visit and Their History
Each site on this Minya and Amarna tour belongs to a different chapter of Egyptian history. Here is the background to each stop.
Minya
Minya is the main city of Middle Egypt, set on the west bank of the Nile, with a long corniche and a mix of Coptic, Islamic and 20th-century buildings. It is the practical base for exploring the archaeology of the surrounding region.
Beni Hassan
On the east bank, the cliffs of Beni Hassan hold about 39 rock-cut tombs of governors of the Oryx nome, carved around 2000 to 1800 BCE. Their painted walls show wrestling matches, hunting in the desert, craftsmen at work and, in the tomb of Khnumhotep II, a caravan of foreign traders. The tombs of Amenemhat, Khnumhotep II, Baqet III and Khety are usually the ones open to visitors.
Speos Artemidos
A short distance south, the rock temple of Speos Artemidos was dedicated to the lioness goddess Pakhet. It was built by Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, and a long inscription describes how Hatshepsut restored temples damaged during the foreign rule of the Hyksos.
Tell El Amarna
Around 1346 BCE, Pharaoh Akhenaten founded a new capital called Akhetaten, the Horizon of the Aten, to worship the sun disk above all other gods. He lived here with Queen Nefertiti, and the young Tutankhamun probably grew up in the city. After Akhenaten's death it was abandoned within a generation. Fourteen boundary stelae mark its limits, and the cliff tombs record a naturalistic art style found nowhere else in Egypt.
Amarna Tombs
The northern tombs, such as those of Meryre I and Huya, show the royal family worshipping the Aten under its rays. The southern tombs include that of Ay, who later became pharaoh, and contain a version of the Great Hymn to the Aten. Reliefs show Akhenaten and Nefertiti in intimate, informal poses that were unusual in earlier royal art.
Amarna Letters and Nefertiti
In 1887, a villager found about 380 clay tablets in Amarna, now known as the Amarna Letters. They are diplomatic messages between Egypt and the rulers of western Asia. In 1912, German archaeologists found the famous bust of Nefertiti in a sculptor's workshop here, and it is now in Berlin.
Tuna El Gebel
Tuna El Gebel was the necropolis of Hermopolis, city of the god Thoth. Its showpiece is the tomb of Petosiris, a high priest of Thoth around 300 BCE, decorated in a blend of Egyptian and Greek styles. Beneath the desert, long galleries hold the mummified remains of ibises and baboons, the sacred animals of Thoth.
Hermopolis Magna
Known in ancient Egyptian as Khemenu, the City of Eight, Hermopolis Magna was a major religious centre. Two giant quartzite baboons of Thoth, dating to the reign of Amenhotep III, still guard the ruins, and parts of a temple and Christian basilica can be seen nearby.
