The 10-day Holy Family pilgrimage tour in Egypt follows the route that Coptic tradition says Mary, Joseph and the child Jesus took when they fled to Egypt, as told in the Gospel of Matthew. Starting and ending in Cairo, the journey runs Cairo → Wadi El Natrun → Minya → Assiut → Cairo, visiting churches and monasteries that have preserved the memory of the Flight into Egypt for almost two thousand years.
This private Christian pilgrimage tour of Egypt is designed for pilgrims, church groups, families and travellers who want a spiritual journey with time to pray, reflect and attend services where possible. A private guide explains the tradition and the history, a private vehicle covers the road, and the programme can be adjusted to your dates and pace before booking.
Tour Overview
According to Coptic tradition, the Holy Family spent about three and a half years in Egypt, travelling from the Sinai coast through the Delta to Cairo and then south by the Nile to what is now Assiut before returning home. This Holy Family tour in Egypt visits the principal places of that journey that are open to pilgrims: Matariya and Old Cairo, Wadi El Natrun, the cliff monastery of Gabal el-Teir in Minya, and the sanctuaries of Dronka and Al-Muharraq near Assiut.

Holy Family Sites and Their Tradition
The sites below are places of devotion rooted in Coptic tradition and the Gospel of Matthew. They are visited as sacred places and as living centres of faith, not as archaeologically proven locations. Here is what each stop represents.
Matariya and the Virgin Mary Tree
At Matariya, near ancient Heliopolis, tradition says the Holy Family rested under a sycamore tree and that a spring appeared for them. The present tree dates from the 17th century and is cared for beside the Church of the Virgin Mary. Nearby stands the obelisk of Senusret I, one of the oldest in Egypt, a reminder of Heliopolis as a major religious centre.
Maadi
On the Nile at Maadi, a church of the Virgin Mary stands where, according to tradition, the Holy Family boarded a boat to travel south. The riverside setting makes it an evocative start to the Upper Egypt part of the journey.
Coptic Cairo and the Crypt of Abu Serga
Coptic Cairo grew inside the Roman fortress of Babylon. The Church of Saint Sergius and Bacchus, known as Abu Serga, stands over a crypt that tradition links with the Holy Family's stay in the city. The Hanging Church, built above a gate of the fortress, is one of the oldest churches in Egypt.
Wadi El Natrun
Tradition says the Holy Family passed through Wadi El Natrun, the desert valley that later became the cradle of Christian monasticism. Its monasteries of Saint Bishoy, the Syrians, Saint Macarius and Baramous continue the prayer tradition of the Desert Fathers.
Gabal el-Teir
Gabal el-Teir, the Mount of the Bird, rises above the east bank of the Nile near Samalut. Tradition says that as the Holy Family sailed past, a rock threatened to fall and the child Jesus steadied it with his hand, and the cliff is said to bear a handprint. A monastery of the Virgin Mary with a cave church stands at the top.
Ashmunein and Mallawi
In Hermopolis (Ashmunein), tradition says the idols fell when the Holy Family entered the city, in fulfilment of Isaiah 19:1. Nearby, rock-cut churches and monasteries in the Mallawi area preserve memories of their stay in Middle Egypt.
Dronka
The Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Dronka near Assiut is built around a cave in the mountain where, by tradition, the Holy Family sheltered on the last stage of their journey. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Upper Egypt and hosts large gatherings during the feast of the Virgin in August.
Al-Muharraq Monastery
Al-Muharraq at Qusqam, near Assiut, is traditionally the place where the Holy Family stayed longest, about six months and ten days, and is sometimes called the Second Bethlehem. The church of the Virgin Mary stands over the spot, and monks live and pray in the monastery today.
Assiut
Assiut is the largest city of Upper Egypt and the base for visiting Dronka and Al-Muharraq. It has been a Christian centre for centuries, with churches, schools and a lively corniche along the Nile.
The Holy Family Trail in Egypt
The Holy Family Trail is the name given to the series of places in Egypt, about twenty-five by tradition, associated with the Flight into Egypt. It starts in the Sinai, passes through the Nile Delta and Cairo, and ends in Upper Egypt at Assiut. The Coptic Church celebrates the Entry of the Holy Family into Egypt each year on 1 June, and the Egyptian state and the Church have worked to develop the trail for pilgrims.
Not every station can be visited in one tour. This programme selects those with established pilgrim access and good facilities, and can be combined with other stops on request.
