Places You Will Visit and Their Story
This Sinai heritage tour links a living seaside community with one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world. Here is the background to each stop.
Sharm El Sheikh
Sharm El Sheikh began as a small Bedouin and fishing settlement at the southern tip of the Sinai and grew into Egypt's major Red Sea resort after the 1980s. It is the gateway to the coral reefs of Ras Mohammed National Park.
Dahab
Dahab, whose name means gold in Arabic, is a former Bedouin fishing village on the Gulf of Aqaba. It has become famous for its relaxed atmosphere, windsurfing, kitesurfing and diving. Its seafront promenade has cafés and craft shops, and the surrounding mountains drop steeply to the sea.
Blue Hole and the Bells
The Blue Hole is a deep sinkhole in the reef just north of Dahab, popular with freedivers and technical divers. Visitors on this tour snorkel only in the shallow reef areas along the edge and at the nearby Bells, and should never attempt deep dives without proper training.
Wadi El Arbain
Wadi El Arbain, the Valley of the Forty, is a green valley near Saint Catherine where Bedouin families grow fruit and herbs. Tradition links it to the forty monks said to have been killed in the area, and the garden walls and springs make it a peaceful stop.
Saint Catherine Protected Area
The high mountains around Saint Catherine form a protected area created in 1988 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. They contain Egypt's highest peaks, rare plants found nowhere else and the Jebaliya Bedouin, who have long served the monastery.
Mount Sinai (Jabal Musa)
In Jewish, Christian and Islamic tradition, Mount Sinai is where Moses received the Ten Commandments. At 2,285 metres, its summit has a small chapel of the Holy Trinity and a mosque, and offers views over a sea of granite peaks at sunrise.
Saint Catherine's Monastery
Founded in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian, Saint Catherine's Monastery is one of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries. Its fortified walls enclose a basilica with a 6th-century mosaic of the Transfiguration, a chapel built around the traditional site of the Burning Bush, a mosque and a famous library of ancient manuscripts and icons.
Codex Sinaiticus and the Library
In the 19th century, the monastery's manuscripts brought world attention when the Codex Sinaiticus, an early Greek Bible, was found here. The library still holds thousands of rare manuscripts, making it one of the most important collections of its kind.

Winter nights at Saint Catherine are very cold, and July and August are hot at the coast. Pack layers, a warm jacket, hat and gloves for the summit, sturdy walking shoes, a head torch, swimwear, sunscreen and modest clothing for the monastery.
